Head Road Guard Rail Replacement and Landslip Remediation Works

Scenic Rim Regional Council has received assistance through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements to replace approximately 200 metres of guard rail damaged by bushfires, as well as landslip remediation and pavement repairs caused by heavy rainfall on a challenging and steep section of Head Road, near Brett Road at Carneys Creek.

Geotechnical surveys undertaken by Council indicate the foundation beneath the guard rail posts require stabilizing, meaning the highly weathered rock slope will be excavated and rebuilt, and a section of the road cut out to allow the guard rail foundations to be suitably rebuilt. The section of Head Road has been closed to date for safety reasons and will remain closed for a further six months for repair works to occur, weather and conditions permitting, with alternative routes available.

Council has announced that these works are due to commence in early February 2023. Additional road repairs and safety improvements to Head Road are also being carried out to enable the anticipated reopening of the road in mid to late December 2023, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The most reliable, all-weather route is currently available via the Cunningham Highway. Alternative shorter routes are available in varying conditions for motorists but are subject to change due to current weather conditions. Council encourages the use of the sealed roads. Construction plant will be active in the area during construction and motorists should follow appropriate roadwork traffic signage.

For more details, view the current Notification of Works.

This project will deliver a safer road for locals and visitors who travel through Carneys Creek with guard rails that protect against vehicles leaving the road and Council will improve drainage and hazard signage.

We acknowledge there may be a level of inconvenience to residents, business owners and motorists while these works are being undertaken. Your patience and understanding is appreciated during this time.

Updates will be provided via Council's website, Let's Talk Scenic Rim and social media accounts, including Facebook and LinkedIn as further information becomes available.
